Lay Instructions

Laying instructions

Careful: following these instructions correctly is a determining factor for the quality and life of your floor.

The relative humidity in the place where the flooring will be installed or stored needs to be between 45% and 60%.  a humidifier has to be  installed to garanty a minimum humidity !! Always!! To keep your floor  in perfect condition in summer- and wintertime!

Floating installation

All our floors can be installed as floating floors.

For ground floors, in case of doubt, we recommend an extra layer of plastic film to protect your parquet floor from rising moisture. Placing an underlay will provide a levelling effect and reduce sound reflection (the sound you hear when you walk on the floor).

Small uneven or damaged spots in the subfloor will also be compensated.

Glue is applied to the tongue and the groove (only the upper side of the groove); this prevents the floor from squeaking when one walks on it.

Glue-down installation

Glue-down installation is mostly used for ground floors in order to prevent any kind of noise.  The use of a 2-component PU glue will ensure that your wonderful wooden floor stays in place for life. Your investment deserves the very best.

Subfloor moisture control

Screed without underfloor heating.   mass moisture content            2 %

Screed with underfloor heating:        mass moisture content            1 %

Anhydrite-based screed:                    mass moisture content            0.6 %

An Official Moisture Tester can, after consultation (guarantee), be borrowed from our company when purchasing floors.

Average drying time for screed

3 to 5 cm thick: 1 week drying time per cm (3 to 5 weeks)

6 to 8 cm thick:  2 weeks drying time per extra cm (7 cm = 5 + 4 = 9 weeks)

9-10 cm thick:  3 weeks drying time per extra cm (10 cm = 5 + 6 + 6 = 17 weeks)

The above are only averages by way of indication (measurement with a moisture tester is absolutely necessary).

The drying time can be reduced considerably by using a drying enhancer and/or dehumidifier. For drying it is important to follow the recommendations of the person who laid the screed.     Careful: do not smoke or hold the device near a source of heat or fire during the use of the moisture tester as this would imply a risk of explosion.

Start of installation:

If the rooms are not too big (up to 50 m2) the installation can be started against one wall. Careful!!! Wall side = groove side.

Leave an 8 mm expansion joint against each wall.

At the door opening or threshold a 2-3 mm gap is sufficient; this can be filled with dry silicone (available in matching colours)

For floating parquet it is best to first glue three or so strips together perfectly, 100% closing at the grooves and in a perfectly straight line. This is essential for a smooth further installation. Check regularly that the strips are straight (with a long spirit level or chalk line). If there is deviation, adjust before further installation.

If necessary use a softwood block, e.g. pinewood in order to fit the strips into one another. Always knock on the tongue, never on the groove side so as to prevent damage.

After placing the strips, it is recommended to polish the floor with a polishing machine. We have already sanded with grain 120.
